During the manufacturing process, the residual stress causes the detrimental effects on the strength of the products that may either cause failure in service or may be beneficial.  For example, due to the compressive stresses on tough glasses, strength in the service is improved. The polariscope strain viewer is an effective tool to analyze the strains on the products made of transparent glass or plastics.
